Dragons in the Deep: Novel Announcement

Last month, before the craziness of NaNoWriMo descended once again, I finally completed 2014’s NaNo-novel. The fourth in the Stone Dragon SagaDragons in the Deep is currently with my proof and beta readers before the next round of editing begins. In the meantime, I wanted to share a little excerpt from the book with you. (if you would like to see the other books in the series, my author page can be found here and the first book in the series, Dragon on My Neck, is available here)

Let me catch you up: It has been a while since the end of Dragon on the Green. Passiona has folded herself into society life, Anna and Jane have graduate college and become ‘real adults’, Al and his siblings have continued to live with their humans, and a new discovery has shaken up their existence. There is a ship, a pirate ship, that sank in warm Caribbean waters 400 years ago. This pirate ship, mentioned in a king’s holdings and suspiciously otherwise invisible, just may hold the key to finding Al’s parents, and ending Passiona’s bid on domination. There are new characters, new settings, and a different style of writing in this book that I hope you will enjoy…and that will seamlessly flow with the previous 3.

Without further ado…I give you Dragons in the Deep: an excerpt –

“This can’t be real,” Zachary whistled in appreciation, “I’ve never seen anything like it!”

“I don’t think anyone has,” Garron breathed the words out almost reverently, staring in amazement at the scene spread before him on the screen and itching to suit up and dive down to the real thing.

“She looks like she could be on the water, instead of under it,” Lance leaned around Garron’s seated figure to get a better look, “Oh boy, what is that girl doing?”

“Nickel,” Garron hit the call button and startled her out of a staring match with a clown fish, “Have you found something of interest?”

“Well I don’t know,” Nickel admitted, turning back to her perusal of the railings. “I haven’t ever seen ship railings covered in designs like this. I think they’re ancient runes and possibly base Latin words but I’ll have to scan these pictures in to be able to translate anything.”

“I’ve seen a few ships with decorative railings,” Flynn drawled, swimming up beside his partner, “But never ones with decoration on every railing and doorway. Even that mast has some marking at its base.”

“What really gets to me,” Nickel added, “Is that we can make out words. After all of this time under the water the marking should be worn down to an almost indistinguishable smoothness. Instead, the relief is as deep and well defined as if it were carved yesterday.”

“Look at this figure head,” Flynn whistled between his teeth, reaching out a tentative hand to feel the woodworked body. “Normally you find women at the head of a ship, but this…this is something amazing. Almost like a Viking ship, but with a Latin flair. Nickel, take a picture!”

“Hurry up you two,” Lance piped in over their earphones, “You’ve been down there almost an hour and that’s plenty for a first dive!”

“Nickel, snap the picture and come on back,” Garron added, “And bring my bone headed brother with you please! He’s starting to wander off again.”

“Aye aye Captain,” Nickel laughingly agreed, quickly swimming out to take a picture of the astounding figure head before catching Flynn, who was busy attempting to open an apparently locked door to a deck cabin. “You heard the men Flynn,” she giggled at her own rhyme, “Time to go on up to our ship man. We’ll come back down soon.”

“Yes we will,” Flynn agreed, noting the low oxygen in their tanks, “We will be back with tools and time.” This promise was more to the ship than to themselves and, as the duo slowly rose to the surface, the ship seemed to watch them and in watching them, the ship knew that it was time too for long kept secrets to be revealed.

Free Dragons! 2 Days Only!

I’m doing a quick 2 day give away of Dragon on My Neck beginning tomorrow (Saturday July 11th) and ending Sunday(July 12th). What does this mean for you?

Well, it means that you can have your very own e-book copy of the novel that started it all! My baby, the first novel I finished edits on and chose to send out to the world, the book that started me out as an indie author AND as a YA series author. As if that wasn’t enough…I am offering a very special prize.

If you download my book and then POST A COMMENT on here stating that you did so, you will be placed in the running for a personalized autographed copy of one of my books (your choice!). If you already downloaded your copy in a previous give away or (gasp!) purchased it, please make that comment as well.

Here’s the twist…If you re-blog this post you get an (extra) entry into the drawing. If someone downloads and comments on here that they got the book because of your re-blog or post, you get an extra entry into the drawing.

Basically, the more you share and get the word out there, the more likely you are to win a physical copy of one of my books!

If we reach 50 different comments (different people commenting) I will up this giveaway to 2 books. Every 25 differentiating comments after that will add a book to the mix. That means if we reach 175 different people who then comment on here that they have downloaded Dragon on My Neck the drawing winner will receive a complete, physical, set of my published works: personalized and autographed to your specifications!

What are you waiting for??? Let’s get the word out so you can win some free books!!

Plot Twists

Here’s one for you…I was working on Book 4 (Dragons in the Deep) and discovered a little inconsistency with two of my characters. You see, they showed up in a pivotal moment of the story and we were bopping right along when I though, well these two are either amazingly adept or not who they seem because they appeared on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Things just might not be right here…I polled my friends as a formality but I knew where we were headed. The next question is…do sea sickness medications work the same on fairies as they do on humans? Their DNA sequences must be fundamentally different, right?

Here I am babbling it all out again, but that’s what I love. The chase, the babbling, the researching and wondering and frustrating blockage that gives way to the AHA moment.  After all, I think I know what happened. But I might not…I enjoy the uncertainty and jolt of recognition that mind tumbling research and sudden realization create. And, as one friend put it, when I ask them for opinions it becomes similar to those ‘choose your own ending’ books we used to devour as kids, waiting in the book department for our parents to finish shopping. We loved those books!

Just a ‘little’ teaser

This is an excerpt from the recently written new chapters of The Stone Dragon Saga Book 4: Dragons in the Deep. In this section we are dealing with a problem of significant proportions…Anna’s new and unwanted (yet BEAUTIFUL) butterfly like wings. This section sets us up for at least two interesting adjustments (alterations really) in the story, and one amazing, astonishing, REALLY BIG secret to be revealed…

“Fascinating…” Z circled the box, staring through lime green edged, thick goggles. “Some type of phosphorescent maybe? There are some types of se life that grow in deep waters even though light doesn’t reach to their depths. Maybe…”

Her mumbling railed off as she continued to round the glowing box, clipboard and 3 pens gripped tightly as notes and measurements were swiftly and meticulously taken.

Seizing the opportunity found in Zoey and company’s excellent distraction, Jane grabbed King Ferdinand’s arm and dragged him out into the empty walkway.

“We have a problem!”

“I know,” Ferdinand interrupted distractedly, “There’s no way Jemas and Bernard are in that little box. So what’s in there? They have an orange tinged glow, according to the information we’ve gathered, so what is THIS?! Could it be a trap?”

“Ferdinand!” Jane’s sharp reprimand brought the Fairy King’s attention back to focus. “That is NOT our biggest problem right now!”

“Anna still won’t come out huh?” Ferdinand patted her arm in the typical, ‘oh poor child thinks she has a big problem’ manner that adults seem to naturally inherit as they grow older (and he had had a LOT of years to practice!)

“Nope,” Jane smiled sarcastically, “But that’s probably because she HAS WINGS!”

“Huh,” Ferdinand held up a finger and dazedly shuffled back into Zoey’ research cabin. “Sorry to interrupt everyone, but Joseph is needed for a conference with our bosses. Thank you.”

“Our boss—umph!” Ferdinand yanked Jo out of the cabin and down the walkway, one hand under the artist’s elbow as they marched past Jane and led the way until their small group had made it back to the relative ‘safety’ of their own ship; Joseph grumbling and questioning the entire way.

“Now Janie,” Ferdinand spoke very slowly, enunciating every word. “Tell us again.”

“AGAIN?” Joseph sputtered, “You never told me the first time! What…”

“Hush.”

“Ok,” Joseph quieted sullenly and sat down, finally taking the hint.

:Now then Jane,” Ferdinand raised perfectly arched eyebrows at the girl. “You may proceed.”

“Ok, woo,’ Jane took a deep breath and released it quickly, “Franme’s light show gave Anna big beautiful butterfly wings.”

“Oh,” Joseph rubbed at his ears. “You may have to tell me again, there’s a sudden buzzing in my brain.”

“I know the feeling,” Jane agreed sadly, “And I have no clue how to fix it.”

“Excuse me,” Flynn’s voice cut through the fog of magical tension like a whip, startling and scaring all involved.

“Flynn,” Joseph stumbled over his words as he tried (and failed) to stand quickly, “What, uh, what can we do for ya today Captain?”

“WE just came to make sure everything was ok,” Garron answered slowly, ducking out from behind his twin. “When we saw you racing across the decks, we got a mite bit worried.”

“We’re fine,” Jane tried to lie, Ferdinand and Jo nodding like bobble heads beside her.

“Ok then,” Flynn smiled calmly, “So tell us about Anna’s wings.”

“Oh.”

A beautiful set of wings any half-fairy lady could be agitated by!

Supernatural Salsa

This is the second in a series of short stories centering on a minor character from The Stone Dragon Saga book 4 (coming soon…)
Last week we saw the dramatic introduction of our new friend, Sergio. Now, let us tune back in to Supernatural Salsa for his interview.

Introduction to the Other Side: Part 2

“Welcome to Supernatural Salsa, Sergio!

“Thank you for having me Ms. Sakowich.”

“Susan please!” She tittered at the deep voice of the well groomed legend.

“Susan it is,” he inclined his large head, “I appreciate your willingness to accommodate my need for privacy today.”

“You are very welcome Mr. De la Kraken. May ask though, why is it that you have come forward now after thousands of years of your people being relegated to the pages of legend? I think we’re all dying to know!” She motioned to the studio audience, who’s dumbfounded expressions immediately transformed to smiles, nods, and cheers.

“Well Susan,” Sergio put on his best news caster voice and leaned a little closer to stare penetratingly into the camera, his big golden irises captivating audiences across the viewing area. “The fate of the world may depend on this interview.”

A collective gasp rose across the world as Supernatural Salsa’s audience sat glued to their computers, phones, and television sets awaiting more from this amazing creature.

“The fate of the entire world?” Susan herself was leaning closer to the large screen, almost levitating from her red arm chair and barely able to contain herself. A mythological creature outing himself on national television would boost the ratings for a few weeks, but this….the kraken was practically signing her new, extended contracts!

“Yes Susan, I’m afraid so,” Sergio was saying, “Maybe even the fate of several worlds. I wish I could say that something is coming to destroy us, because then it would be easier to guard ourselves against the threat. But I’m afraid it has already been here, hiding among the elite and the workers alike for thousands of years, amassing power and followers.”

“Oh,” Susan tuned back in long enough to know that a political rant was about to take off. “And we would love to hear all about it, After This Word From Our Sponsors!…CUT IT EARL!”

Introduction to The Other Side

Hello and welcome all to this very special edition of Super-Natural Salsa, where we take myths and legends from around the globe and lay them bare in half hour segments. I am your host, Sassy Susy Sakowich, and do I have a story for you today!

Deep in the heart of the deepest depths of the ocean, surrounded by decaying relics of long forgotten civilizations, lives one of the most terrifying creatures in all of humankind’s mythologies.

Just one of his eyes is bigger than your head, his body is bigger than the tank of an S.U.V. my brother just bought, and when you add in his extremities…well, it’s safe to say that he’s bigger than most blocks of houses; and he isn’t alone.

A complex society of these sea beasts ranges throughout the world’s deepest waterways and, though feared by humans, these creatures rarely bring themselves to the surface, preferring to keep to themselves within the engulfing shadows of their homes.

As with most things, there are some exceptions. They emerge to socialize with other sea creatures during the annual Fire Falls {meteor showers}, ancient history week {school is school after all}, and whenever a lovely storm can camouflage their presence from the pesky humans who drove them deeper generations ago! but no long believe in, or fear, their presence.

It wasn’t always this way. Once, long ago, the beasts were free to rest on the calm waters and bask in the warm sunlight, their large bodies and floating arms creating a beautiful play area for other sea life. Humans changed all of that when. They became bolder and more likely to attempt landing on the poor animals in search of fish for supper. The beasts did not begrudge humans their food, it is the way of the world that some creatures must eat others in order to thrive. However, these sailors were stomping all over the poor animals, leaving scars and cuts from anchors, and ruining the safety that the traveling playground should have provided.

When you think about it, they had every right and many reasons to get upset and snap at those explorers! Of course, the sailors took it poorly and began to tell some fearful tales about creatures with long tentacles and a body over a mile-and-a-half wide. These horrid beasts were after only one thing…a meal made of humans! They could spear you with a horn, wrap long tentacles around your ship, and pull everything underwater…creating a whirlpool to Suck down anything that might have been missed on the waters surface. (No survivors? Where did the stories come from then, I wonder?).

Norwegians and Scandinavians call these frightful beasts the Sykraken, some Europeans refer to it as the Krabben, and most of us probably know it best as THE KRAKEN!

But do we really know anything at all? Is this chilling tale honestly as terrifying as all that? Or do we just fear them because we fear what we don’t know?

Here today, via satellite from the waters beside an undisclosed Caribbean Isle, and hoping to answer a few of our questions is a very special guest and a dear friend of a friend. Please Welcome to the Blender, Sergio de la Kraken!
